Full Steam ahead for Charity

At 4.30am on the 6th June 2014, Mike and Liz Fuller began an epic journey from John O’Groats to Land’s End to raise money for Demelza Hospice care for Children.  The Fuller’s rode in a coal powered steam roller from the 1930’s, Rhoda, which was powered by coal from Miller Argent’s site at Ffos-y-fran.

Rhoda began her working life in 1930 in Newport and worked in South Wales and the borders until retirement in 1958.  She was then bought by the Fuller’s who are steam enthusiasts from Sussex.

The crew for the journey included other engine operators and drivers as well as a support vehicle that towed the sleeping quarters for the crew, a Kentish living van that gave the crew a place to rest on their journey.

The journey took 16 days in total, with Rhoda and her crew averaging around 4-5 miles on hour and aiming to do 60 miles a day.  The route included stops at places such as Lockerbie and took in many towns and villages along the route.
