Bowls keeping all ages competitive in Merthyr

Miller Argent, sponsors of the Rhymney Gwent Bowls Club, was delighted to attend the juniors’ final competition of the season on Tuesday 8th July.

Overseen by qualified umpire, Lee Brock (Welsh certified coach), 16 children, aged 7-11, from Upper Rhymney Primary School bowled it out to be named this year’s champion.

Lee Brock, who was formerly a local policeman, said “The quality of these players is exceptional and it’s great to see a group of youngsters using their energy in such a constructive manner. It’s very positive for the future of Club. This is no longer just an old man’s game!”

Miller Argent also had time to catch up with Eddy Matthews of Fochriw who’s been playing since 1974. At 88 years old Eddy is the club’s oldest player and managed to pursue his love of the sport despite working as a miner. As he watched the competition Eddy explained; “As a miner I worked long hours, but I tried hard to find time to practice. I still got beaten by a lad half my age today though!”
