Merthyr Walkathon taking steps to support local Cancer charities
Now in its third year, the annual Merthyr Walkathon, which took place on Sunday the 11th of June, was attended by over 800 walkers.
Proceeds from the event, which was arranged by local organiser Jayne Brown, will raise money for Macmillan Merthyr and families from Merthyr each affected by Cancer.
Offering participants a choice of a 16mile, 10mile or 4mile long route, walkers set off from Rhydycar Leisure Centre before taking in the sights of Merthyr and its surroundings including the Taff Trail and Pontygwaith’s famous humpback bridge. Those taking on the full 16 mile route walked as far as Quakers Yard before returning via Aberfan and back to the Leisure Centre. Over a hundred family groups opted to undertake 4 mile route.
Following the event, Jayne Brown said, “The event has been a huge success, the final total has yet to be calculated but we’re hoping that it will be similar to the amount that was raised by last year’s Walkathon. We would like to thank our event sponsors, including Miller Argent, and most importantly, all of the wonderful people who took part in the Walkathon and helped make this year’s event our best yet.”
